Ah, the lotus and the water lily – nature’s version of motivational speakers!

They are not only beautiful and captivating, in the world of spiritual symbolism they have deep and wise stories to tell. These water plants symbolize the journey from “I’m stuck in the mud” to “Look at me now, shining bright!”. However alike they may seem, they are different plants. The lilly rests on the water surface and has a greater color range, while the lotus is elevated above the water. They both start out rooted in mud below water and in order to blossom, they must make their way through the murky water and break the surface. That way, they share an important lesson: no mud, no flower. In time they emerge and bloom in the sun, beautiful and whole. At nightfall, they can even close up and sink back into the water or mud only to re-emerge beautifully intact the following day. Essentially, they’re like people seeking solace after a taxing day.
